Sat down the very bottom of Queen Street conveniently close to Britomart sits No.1 Queen Street. They change their beers on tap frequently and it is well worth popping in on your way out, and then again on the way back home.

A really strong selection of craft beer, both on tap and in bottles. The tap options seem to change regularly and offer a range of styles other than purely the craft lagers available at other venues. The pricing is reasonable for The Viaduct, and with any luck craft beer can firmly establish its presence in the trendy part of town with this location, here's hoping.

A sound selection of craft beer in bottles. not a huge selection but ranging from PKB, to Leffe Blonde, to Hallertau Porter Noir it is worth popping in, perhaps on the way to or from Galbraiths. If you are so inclined there is also a great selection of whisky and cigars.

Very Ponsonby, but in a good way. Golden Dawn is the home of Hallertau in the city. Hidden away with no signage or advertising everything is announced through their website/blog as well as facebook and twitter, word of mouth is their method of attracting customers and it works well, ensuring that the character of the venue remains true to its original intention.

Newmarket, Auckland

The Lumsden is one of a number of bars which have cut ties with the big breweries in order to serve a decent range of craft beer. Newmarket really needed a craft beer bar so hopefully the suits around their will put down their traditional green bottles and pick up a decent beer.

Browns Bay

Also in Brown's bay along with Deep Creek Brewing Co., Speakers Corner offer a range of English beers both bottled and on tap and is especially popular with poms such as myself. Given that us poms are notoriously adverse to parting with our cash, it helps that a proper pint costs less than a handle of Lion Red does most places in Auckland.

Originally from Nelson, Sprig & Fern has its roots deep in the Nelson and Tasman region where they now have six pubs.  The business plan is reported be that now they feel they have a strong foothold in the region they will look to expand into the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch as the next phase of their brand development. Proper 568mL pints are a rare novelty nowadays and it a prime example of how Sprig & Fern maintains the traditional pub atmosphere.

Tahi Bar

Email: info@tahibar.com

Facebook

Located on what is essentially the route north from Auckland, Tahi Bar opened in early '08 and has always had a philosophy of offering the best NZ craft beers. Ian has been involved in craft beer since the very start and what is more typical of a craft beer lover then to settle down in a quiet town, at the outer edge of the Auckland region and unleash quality beer, liberating the local population? With a selection to rival many of Auckland's best spots you would be missing out if you didn't make a detour to drop in whenever heading north, and back south again.  It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the start of your holidays, or stretch them out for just one more pint.
